Even Google Makes Mistakes

It pays to stay on top of your website design, but don’t forget other important aspects of website management, like ensuring your domain name is still yours. The following anecdote about Google briefly losing rights to its name is a reminder that even massive tech companies are not immune to tech mistakes.

A former Google employee was checking out the company’s domain service platform. He thought it was a mistake at first, but he noticed Google.com was available for purchase. He put it in his cart, entered his credit card information and hit “purchase.” It actually went through and briefly he was the owner of the Google.com domain for a measly $12.

He quickly reported it to Google Security and the company began an extensive and expensive investigation into what happened. Google has for years shelled out a lot of money to researchers so they can find vulnerabilities in its platform. “Ethical hacking,” as this research is called, shows Google’s dedication to security vigilance.

Top Reasons to Secure Website Management

If Google can experience this type of lapse in domain registration, you can as well. Partnering with a website design and development professional can help ensure your company’s website is secure and running properly.

  • Threat Protection
Cybercriminals are always looking for an easy target. Phishing, malware and other attacks can cause extensive damage to a company’s reputation. Updating security protocols, ensuring firewalls are functional and implementing other security tools will help keep your site safe.
  • Trust
The more secure your website is, the better your chance of earning your customers’ trust.
  • Domain Expiration
It’s the little things that seem come back to bite you, like it did in Google’s domain registration lapse. Your website manager will keep a close eye on all these small things, including domain registration expiration dates.
  • Website Performance
Regular website performance auditing acts as a tune-up, but the audits can also include searching for security flaws that need to be fixed.
