Social Media Marketing for Small Businesses

A gold lighted hashtag and an SJC Social Media Guide against a white background.

When you’re a small business owner, you have a lot of priorities competing for your attention. But marketing is key as it plays an important role in helping your business stay visible, build credibility and connect with the people you want to reach.

That’s why social media marketing has become such an important tool for small businesses. It gives you an opportunity to build brand awareness, strengthen relationships with your audience, showcase what makes your business unique and stay connected with potential customers where they already spend their time.

Here are a few guiding principles for your social media marketing:

Get Personal: Knowing your audience is a big part of social media marketing success when you’re a small business. You need to understand the people most likely to buy from you.

If you’re a gym that caters to women ages 30 to 55, think about what else you know about your typical member. Is she a professional who works full time? Maybe she’s also an outdoor enthusiast, working out during the week to go hiking or kayaking on the weekends. Thinking through these aspects of your typical audience helps you speak directly to a person, rather than generically to a crowd.

Focus on Quality, Not Quantity: It’s not about being on the most social media platforms but on the right ones. Start by identifying one or two social media platforms that best align with the brand, audience and type of content you want to share. For example, a retail brand may benefit from the visual nature of Instagram or the short-form video of TikTok, while a B2B company may find LinkedIn more effective for reaching professional audiences.

Once the right platforms are identified, it will be key to create content that is relevant, engaging and consistent. Consistency matters more than posting frequently; an account that starts with daily posts and then goes inactive can give the impression that the business is no longer active.

The Importance of Short-Form Video: Show off a little-known use of your product or do a quick how-to. Try a mini behind-the-scenes video. Short-form video is everywhere on social media because users engage with it. They like to get a quick hit of information.

Feeling self-conscious? Try to leave that behind. Social media marketing is best when it’s authentic, which means a little imperfection makes everyone feel more comfortable.

Reels, TikToks and Shorts are all good options, but the main idea is to keep it under 60 seconds.

Engage in the Comments: This is what you’re after; getting your audience to comment or ask questions helps more people see your post. You want posts designed to engage. Examples include posts that end with a question or invite people to join the conversation. An Instagram contest or a Facebook poll are great boosters to engagement.

Make Friends With Data: Social media marketing platforms come with great data analysis tools that allow you to see what’s working and what’s not.  It helps you determine what kinds of posts work best, as well as the time of day to post, the effectiveness of video content versus other types and which platform is yielding the best results.

You’ve got limited time and budget, so you need the social media marketing strategies that work best for small businesses. Not sure how to get started? Contact us at SJC Marketing.
