What a Grill Master Can Teach Us About Marketing

A person stands at a grill flipping hamburgers with a gathering of people in the background.

By the time summer rolls around, you’ve probably eaten a few burgers. Maybe a ballpark dog or two. And even if you’re not the one who’s usually minding the grill at your house, you probably know a thing or two about what you like.

The same is true of marketing; even if you’re not a marketing specialist, you know good marketing when you see it.

Take a moment to consider a few lessons you can take from someone experienced on the grill:

Consistency is Important: From flipping the meat too often to using uneven heat, there are a lot of areas that, when inconsistent, can ruin an otherwise great cut of meat.

In marketing, this is your content calendar. When you are inconsistent, posting a blog when you feel like it or creating a video here and there, your audience doesn’t know what to expect. If you have managed to get a few contacts to watch for your posts, you don’t want to disappoint them and cause them to lose interest.

Consistency in content marketing brings many benefits:

  • SEO improves because search engines like predictability
  • Your audience begins to think of you as a reliable thought leader
  • Social media feed algorithms favor consistency

Add Some Seasoning: To be more specific, you’ve got to let your meat marinate a bit! Get those good seasonings seeping into the meat, and you’ll achieve deeper, multi-layered flavor and tender texture.

Marinate your marketing, too, with tools and strategies that build a foundation for growth. For instance, invest in a good keyword strategy to boost SEO and drive more traffic to your site. You might also want to improve accessibility on your website to make sure all users can navigate it with ease.

Another area that pays off over time is competitive analysis. Watch the trends and social activities that your competitors embrace. Rather than imitating it, look for ways to differentiate yourself in your market.

Thing About the Total Experience: A great menu is just a starting point; so much of grilling is the ultimate goal of sharing it with others. From neighborhood block parties to a family BBQ, you may be grilling for a crowd.

Beyond the perfectly prepared meat, you want to offer a set of great sides, drinks that complement the menu and something memorable for dessert. You also want the kind of yard games that bring people together, plus a fire pit for stretching the fun late into the night.

The equivalent is how all of your marketing works together, from your website to social and even print materials, to provide a cohesive brand experience. You want your customers to feel like they have had a visit with your brand, not just completed a transaction.
