With the start of the NFL playoffs comes our hometown team’s hunt for history. Our beloved Chiefs have secured the AFC’s number one seed, giving them a well-deserved bye in the Wild Card round of the playoffs—hence why they did not compete this past weekend. As we advance into the Divisional round, the stakes are higher than ever, as this is no ordinary Super Bowl run. No, this is a quest for something that has never been accomplished before… the NFL’s first Super Bowl 3-peat.
What’s a 3-peat, you may ask? It’s a play on the word “repeat.” Some say, “back-to-back,” while a 3-peat means “back-to-back…to back.” There have been 3-peats in three of the four major sports (NBA, MLB, NHL), but never in the NFL. As I’m sure you all remember, the Chiefs are the defending champions of the NFL’s past two Super Bowls. With a thrilling 38-35 victory over the Philadelphia Eagles in Super Bowl 57 and a hard-fought 25-22 victory over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl 58… this year’s playoff race could complete the coveted trifecta and etch the 2022-2024 Chiefs into NFL history.
Seven franchises have tried, but all have failed. From the 1966-68 Green Bay Packers to most recently the 2003-2005 New England Patriots, back-to-back championships, could not be capped off with a third Super Bowl ring. The Patrick Mahomes-led Chiefs have experienced unprecedented success dating back to 2018. With 6 straight AFC Championship appearances and 3 Super Bowl Championships in the last 5 years, there’s plenty of hope for this year’s title chances. The journey begins tomorrow at Arrowhead Stadium for the Divisional matchup against the Houston Texans.
Tomorrow, all of Kansas City will hold their breath as the quest for the NFL’s first back-to-back-to-back Super Bowl run is officially at stake. Arrowhead will be rocking, and the energy will be unmatched. Red Kingdom, it’s time to get excited for the playoffs. This year could be the year we witness history right before our eyes. They say the third time’s a charm… we can only hope so. So, get ready for the possibility of the Kansas City Chiefs’ third consecutive Lombardi trophy… It’s time to get loud! Go Chiefs!
