Waffles date back to ancient Greece, where cooks prepared flat cakes between two heated metal plates. Then, during the Middle Ages, European blacksmiths created ornate waffle irons, which ultimately gave waffles their signature grid pattern. In 1869, Cornelius Swarthout patented the first American waffle iron on August 24, which is why we celebrate National Waffle Day. It wasn’t until the 1964 World’s Fair in New York, however, that Belgian waffles as we know them today really caught on…and they’ve never looked back.
