Maybe you’ve volunteered at your local animal shelter, then decided to take a little friend home. You may have set out a few pantry items on your porch for scouts on a Saturday morning. Or maybe you’ve rounded up your total here and there to help a cause embraced by your grocery store.
Nonprofit organizations are a vital part of American life, helping to fill in the gaps where families and communities-even animals- need a boost. You’ve likely been involved with one or more!

Whether you’ve been an integral part of your favorite organization, or you’re an occasional volunteer, National Nonprofit Day is a great addition to your calendar!
Today, August 17, it’s the ideal time to check out a few nonprofits in our community and see if there’s a place where you can donate, volunteer or get the word out. Here in St. Joe, there are several that make it easy for you to join the effort, including the following:
Sisters of Solace: Offering a hospitable place of healing for victims of trafficking, abuse and addiction, Sisters of Solace lavishes love on women through housing, clothing, food, employment and more. You can help by making a donation from the organization’s Amazon list or visiting the market and coffee shop at 3024 Frederick Avenue.
Youth Alliance: From crisis prevention to youth asset development and early childhood education, Youth Alliance is building up strong future generations of Northwest Missouri. The organization is highly involved with substance use prevention among area youth as well as supporting education and employment opportunities for those moving into the early years of adulthood. Serve alongside youth volunteers, mentor a young parent or donate to Youth Alliance—there are many opportunities to get involved.
Big Brothers Big Sisters: Helping a young person pursue a stable, meaningful and independent life sometimes just means showing up. Mentoring through Big Brothers Big Sisters is as simple as spending time with a young person and building a relationship through monthly outings.

Celebrating National Nonprofit Day is easy when you start with Monday Morning Coffee. We’ve shared a few of our favorite local nonprofit opportunities, but there are many out there. Find one that aligns with your interests and hobbies and get involved!
