If you’re a St. Joseph native, chances are you’ve experienced a beloved Southside tradition — the iconic Sack ‘n’ Sav chili dog. For years, it was a cherished staple of the community, served fresh from the neighborhood grocery store. When Sack ‘n’ Sav closed its doors in 2012, it left more than just an empty storefront — it left a void in the hearts (and stomachs) of loyal fans across the city.

Fortunately, a local favorite has stepped in to revive the legacy. KolbDon’s, a St. Joseph-based food truck, has brought the legendary chili dog back to life. And now, with the recent addition of a second permanent truck located on King Hill Avenue, it’s easier than ever for longtime fans and first-timers alike to enjoy this classic taste of the Southend.

The chili dog itself, a seemingly simple creation, boasts a fascinating and somewhat mysterious history. There are several theories of who first topped a hot dot with savory meat sauce. This is probably because American cuisine is a melting pot of cultures. Some say it was influenced by spicier chili, a Mexican American creation from San Antonio. In another version, the Coney Island dog originates in Greek American culture.

However, one of the earliest claims attributes the pairing of a hot dog and meat sauce to George Todoroff in Jackson, Michigan, in 1914. Today, three Michigan establishments battle over the credit.

While the chili dog may be the star of the show for many KolbDon’s patrons, the menu offers a variety of other options to satisfy diverse cravings. Try their brisket sandwiches, loaded fries, baked potatoes and grilled cheese. You can also choose from a wide assortment of lemonade flavors.

Co-owner Kolby Peters is thankful for the support from the community. He and the KolbDon’s team are committed to honoring the tradition while continuing to grow and serve more of St. Joseph.

To stay up to date on the latest news from the food truck including hours of operation, current locations, and featured menu items,  be sure to follow KolbDon’s on their official Facebook page.
