Some things in life are so good, they need a whole month of celebration! It’s National Book Month in October and there are plenty of reasons to celebrate:

Reading is so cozy. It’s the perfect way to usher in the cooler months. Grab your favorite latte or a cappuccino, a good book and your coziest blanket. Extra credit if you have a cat or dog that wants to snuggle up! Pick a spot near a window so you can watch the leaves change between chapters. Ah, perfection.

It’s a great way to learn something new. Whether it’s a self-help book that equips you to be better at being you or a biography on a historical figure, you can learn a lot in just a few pages of reading. Even if you prefer fiction, there’s a lot to learn when you mentally enter the world of another time, place or set of circumstances.

Reading reduces stress. Turn the pages of an engaging book, and see if you can escape your troubles for a bit. It’s the perfect way to wind down at the end of a busy evening or take a break from technology on a Saturday.

It’s budget-friendly entertainment. When you consider the cost per hour of a book purchase compared to, say, a movie ticket or sporting event, reading is a low-cost form of fun. Swap a book with a friend, visit the library or shop used books and the cost drops even more.

Books require no maintenance. No replacement parts, no subscriptions to renew, no special attire. Reading is a low-cost-of-entry activity and no matter how much you love to read, you won’t find that you need a particular kind of shoes, gear or certification.

Reading can be a social connection. Thinking about ways to celebrate National Book Month? One option is meeting a friend at The Story Collective. If you’re bringing a young friend, you might schedule your visit for story time on the first Saturday morning of the month at 11 a.m. The Story Collective also hosts author talks with a Q&A about once a month.

You may take it one step further and make October the month you organize a book club. Invite friends over for a glass of wine and a good talk about a great book. Whether it’s a one-time event or you decide to meet every month, you’ll be glad you had a bit of fun with reading and friends.

At SJC Marketing, we love to talk about what we’re reading. Whether it’s a bit of true crime, a presidential biography, a bestseller or a classic, there are so many good books and so little time. Happy reading for National Book Month!
