Monday Morning Coffee Reflections on National Volunteer Month

April is National Volunteer Month, and we’re guessing you already lend a hand in some great organizations!

Maybe you volunteer with a service organization, gather canned goods or used clothing from your friends and neighbors or you’re on a regular shift with your favorite cause. If so, you know this is not only a fantastic way to all pitch in to better the community; it’s also good for finding people who share your love of serving and making good friends.

There’s so much to do, from serving on the phones for a suicide hotline to sweeping the floor at a local shelter. No matter what skills you bring or time you have, there’s an opportunity for you to volunteer.

There are many great organizations for you to serve with right here in St. Joseph. Take a look at a few of them:

Sisters of Solace: This non-profit is funded entirely by the generosity of donors, supporters and partners who share their vision for providing support to survivors of trauma, trafficking or addiction. If you’re new to partnering with an organization, one of the easiest ways to get started is by simply visiting the Sisters of Solace Candle Market & Coffeeshop or making a purchase from an Amazon wish list. There are also opportunities to pray, give and serve to this amazing organization.

Big Brothers Big Sisters: Make a difference simply by being a friend and mentor to a young person. Serving with Big Brothers Big Sisters usually involves being matched with someone looking for an older friend and spending a few times a month hanging out with them. If you enjoy everyday activities, such as going to a movie or grabbing some good food with a friend, this volunteer opportunity might be right for you.

Youth Alliance: Get involved with an organization making a difference in the lives of local youth. From mentoring a teen parent to serving with Youth Volunteer Corps, there are many ways to serve that make a direct impact on the community. Join the Drug Free Community Coalition or serve on one of the committees that organize Youth Alliance events.

Habitat for Humanity: With more than 80 homes completed in the St. Joseph area, Habitat for Humanity is making a difference in your community. From working on-site, building homes for families, to organizing donations and office tasks, there’s a way for you to get involved with Habitat for Humanity. No matter what your skill level or availability, you can jump in to help a local family move in to their new home.

At SJC Marketing, volunteering is in our DNA. We love serving as a team, and we each serve individually in the community. If you’re just getting started, ask us where we give our time and we can celebrate National Volunteer Month together!
