Monday Morning Coffee: Giving Back to the Community During the Holidays

The year is coming to a close and two big holidays are coming up. As your company is searching for aHoliday 1 way to break through the noise of Black Friday ads and gain customers for the holiday season, don’t forget to give back to your local community.

In the St. Joseph, Missouri area there are multiple ways to give back:

  • You could volunteer with Habitat for Humanity to sell tickets for the playhouse or gift wrap Christmas Presents at East Hills Shopping Center until Christmas Eve. Please contact Rita Boyer at 816-279-2552 for information.
  • The YWCA’s JUMP program is holding their annual Christmas party on December 9 at McCarthy Baptist Church activity center to serve teenagers raising children. Volunteers are needed to set up, tear down, provide meals, work craft stations, etc. Email Traci McChristy at tracimcchristy@yahoo.com for more information.
  • The Saturday after Thanksgiving community members are invited to bring clothing items to the St. Joseph Chick-fil-A to keep our neighbors warm this winter. Call United Way at (816) 364-2381 for information.

The next thing to do after you give back as a business is to communicate with your audience how your brand cares about the community.

Remember, social media is the new word of mouth and brands who are doing really well on social media give a sneak peek about the company environment behind the scenes. Don’t be shy to post photos of a group of your employees or management packing shoeboxes for Operation Christmas Child or feeding seniors at a local food kitchen. Your customers want to know how you are giving back.

Focus on the impact of the service group in your community when posting about your involvement in giving back. A positive post that will engage your customers might be, “We had the opportunity to work at @ShelterName today. It was wonderful hearing people’s stories and seeing the impact this program is having on the community, serving ## meals every day. Thank you for letting us take part.”

Please comment below if you know of any more opportunities community members have to give back to the community during the holidays. At SJC, we have supported Hillcrest Transitional Housing and Second Harvest Community Food Bank at their recent banquets and we love volunteering in our community.
