Local Treasure Celebrates 50 Inspiring Years
This week, grab your mug and learn a little more about a true gem of northwest Missouri that attracts thousands of visitors each year – the Albrecht-Kemper Museum of Art. Across the Midwest, few art museums can compare to the collections, setting, events and educational programs offered by this mansion-turned-museum.
Now in its 50th year, the Albrecht-Kemper is celebrating in high style soon with an anniversary party to remember. Set for May 6, 2016, the 50th Golden Gala will feature a grand kickoff event highlighting the museum’s 1966 founding, along with several additional 50th anniversary events for the year ahead. Not only is this event a special milestone, but it’s a chance to commemorate and showcase what makes the museum so unique – both for current visitors and those who have participated in the museum’s mission over the last five decades. (Note: The first official painting for the Albrecht collection was acquired in 1915. The 50th anniversary celebrates 50 years in the current space).
From a collections perspective, guests will be surprised at the sheer volume of space the museum offers. The main floor area was once a historic mansion home and still shows some beautiful architectural elements. An extended gallery space, complete with stately columns and a fountain outside, gives a sleek, modern and inviting feel and provides for large multi-dimensional exhibits. Downstairs, several classroom areas and gallery rooms continue the inspiring atmosphere. (There’s even a theater with red velvety seats and a stage). Of course, locals and many guests have also discovered the indescribably unique architecture of the downstairs art library and the “special” room tucked into one corner of it. (You’ll have to see it for yourself to understand). The art spans from traditional to modern and across four centuries, and you’ll find local artist exhibits as well as classic pieces from well-known professional names.
Throughout the year, the Albrecht-Kemper successfully hosts a range of events, from wine tastings to classes for adults and children and memorable community events – including the extremely well-attended annual Sugarplum Festival. An on-site café serves lunch and hosts special groups and gatherings. Few spaces in the region can boast the diversity of community offerings and options for special events as the Albrecht-Kemper.
What makes the Albrecht-Kemper such a local favorite and gives it its staying power? The events, classes and amenities speak to a need for a creative outlet for area painters, poets and more. Community is another central theme. You’ll see regional artist groups, free community events and numerous organizations and volunteers coming alongside the Albrecht-Kemper mission. In short, this is an art museum that’s truly for everyone across all ages, artistic experience levels and interests.
Consistent social media postings, a clean and well-organized website, an active membership base and carefully planned and well-executed events have also helped the continued success of this wonderful space. Today, consider what you’ve got to offer in your own organization or business that’s beautiful and should be shared. It’s likely that your own work of art is there and waiting for new audiences to come and discover.
