I know you’re giggling now too. It’s just too funny to pass up. I know I am not the only one out there that enjoys a good pun. In fact, that’s one of the reasons that the Lettuce Dream organization in Maryville, MO caught my eye. Their name made me smile and that smile grew when I learned what their organization is about.

The Lettuce Dream organization is made up of individuals who are working together to provide employment, education and work experience for people with cognitive and developmental disabilities. The greenhouse they hope to build will grow hydroponic lettuce and other produce that will be sold locally.

The non-profit organization is relatively new in the community but it has a big following. Non-profits can sometimes find marketing their vision tricky, especially because of limited budget and volunteers.

Thankfully, using social media is free. The organization hopes to raise enough funds to build a self-sustaining greenhouse, an initiative that received a great head start when the organization raised $20,000 with a Celebrity Waiter Dinner and silent auction earlier this year. With the project still needing more funds, how can a grassroots effort continue its momentum?

We have seen huge success with social media marketing campaigns, special events and e-newsletter campaigns, all of which can be very budget friendly and have a large impact. The Lettuce Dream organization has a catchy title that people will remember and a cause that inspires so they have the perfect recipe for success. By engaging people in their community to share their own dreams on their social media using a common hashtag, they could create some great organic conversation.
